Knowledge gaining: Students will gain knowledge about natural disasters in various ways. First, students will watch a short video about natural disasters introducing the topic. Next, students will be divided into groups. Once the students know which natural disaster they will be researching (either drought, floods, or tornadoes) using the websites provided to gather the information needed. Then students will formulate question about their group topic to ask an expert. Lastly, students will work in groups to make their Wiki page with the information collected.
Knowledge organizing: Students will work individually and in groups to gather and organize information. Once the students know which natural disaster they will be researching (either drought, floods, or tornadoes) the students will record the information learned into a Google doc table provided. As they continue researching with the website provided, the students will continue to fill in their Google doc table. After students have filled out their table, they will collaborate with group members to make questions an expert can answer and place these question in a Google spreadsheet provided. Lastly, students will continue working with their group to create a Wiki space with the information collected from the videos, website and expert interview.
Knowledge sharing: Students will share their work in a multiple of ways. First, students will share their questions for the expert in the Google spreadsheet which will be viewed by rest of the class and will be discussed if each question is acceptable once each group has submitted their questions.Next, groups will view their class research findings through the use of a Wiki. Lastly, students will share a reflection they learned from their class Wiki on the class Blog.
Preparation
Teacher will have to arrange the video conference meeting with the expert.
Teacher will have to create the Google Doc and Spreadsheet which includes a table the group needs to fill out for their Wiki page as well as the spreadsheet for the expert questions.
Teacher will have to create a Natural Disasters wiki in wikispaces.com and give access to all students.
Teacher will have to set up a new Blog for the Natural Disaster Reflections.
